Covaris, Inc. and University of Copenhagen-Novo Nordisk Center for Protein Research Announced the Acquisition of a Covaris LE220-plus Instrument to streamline sample preparation for mass spectrometry (MS) based proteomics

Press Release

November 20, 2019

WOBURN, Massachusetts, November 20, 2019 — The Covaris LE220-plus system is a unique system powered by Adaptive Focused Acoustics® (AFA®) technology. It is the only system on the market engineered to deliver highly controlled acoustic energy to biological samples to maximize protein retrieval for proteomics sample preparation.  This innovative focused ultrasonic technology enables processing of samples in 96-well and higher formats in temperature-controlled and non-contact environments.

“We have tested this specific platform extensively in our sister laboratory at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Munich.  Using our materials and setup, we can now prepare hundreds of biological and clinical samples in a highly streamlined manner” said Professor Matthias Mann, head of the Clinical Proteomics group at CPR and Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry.  “We want to mirror and expand these results now at CPR in Copenhagen” he added.

“AFA significantly improves current proteomic workflows by increasing throughput and data reproducibility while reducing turnaround time requirements.  These improvements result in efficient protein extraction from diverse samples, such as FFPE, fresh tissues, and cell lines in a streamlined manner, “said Nicolas Autret, Business Development Manager, Covaris Ltd.

The Covaris LE220-plus operates in-line with state-of-the-art MS based proteomics workflows and is tailored to pre-processing, input amounts, enrichment needs, and post-processing steps.  This novel technology is expected to provide unique insights for identification of post-translational modifications.  Importantly, the Covaris range of focused-ultrasonicators offer scalable protocols covering sample preparation needs from high-throughput batch processing to benchtop units, and thus not only serve high volume translational laboratories, but smaller biomedical laboratories as well.

About Novo Nordisk Center for Protein Research

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR) was established in 2007 at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. Their vision is to become a world leader in exploring how protein modifications and their functional networks drive fundamental biological processes that underlie health and disease, by developing integrated protein technology platforms and large heterogeneous data management systems.
